I was a few beers down before I got the nerve up to go home. I don’t know what I expected, but I kind of knew that Rachelle was going to be gone. This wasn’t the first time that my temper and subsequent actions had freaked someone out before. It probably wouldn’t be the last either. Truth was though, I regretted the hell out of it.

Not only was Rachelle gone, but she had left all of her things. Granted, it wasn’t that much, but there was so little, and I knew that as she had put it, it was everything that she owned. What she had told me about Jesse, which wasn’t much because we didn’t talk about him, was that the guy was a mess, and she was happy to be single. We didn’t have a conversation where we swapped horror stories of dating. That’s kind of what I liked about Rachelle. She was so chill, and even though it was clear that her divorce was bad, she didn’t want to harp on it like most people.

I think that was what surprised me the most when I saw her kissing Jesse. I hadn’t known who it was, just that it was someone touching her that wasn’t me. That was all I had seen, and maybe in the back of my mind it was her ex, but it hadn’t mattered. He had called her his wife several times, but Rachelle was divorced. Even Candace, who had apparently made it all happen, had known that they were divorced. She said that Rachelle had secrets, but it was clear that she didn’t know what those secrets were, because she would have told me if she did.

I called out her name, hearing the sound of pain in my voice. I had fallen for her, there was no other way to say it, and now I wanted her back. I wanted her back in my arms and she was gone. The only thing that gave me a little bit of hope was that all of Rachelle’s things were here, so she had to come back, right?
